DISCERNING GOD'S CALL

Jesus called people from all walks of life: tax collectors, doctors and fishermen to be His close friends and disciples. He demanded a complete self-gift of these few and promised a hundredfold in return and life eternal.

The Book of Psalms in the Scriptures tells us that "God knit me in my mother’s womb" and "He calls us by name."

This call to intimate friendship with God is a mystery and it is a gift. The life-vocation of each person is as unique as their own fingerprints or DNA.

As a community, we endeavor to discern the will of God in many ways. We listen respectfully to the presence of God speaking in and through each Sister. We listen to the signs of the times in the events of daily life because we know that God speaks through ordinary people and ordinary events. We listen to our own hearts because we know that God will guide us if we are attentive to the gently whispered inspirations of His Holy Spirit within us.

We invite a woman who feels called to follow Jesus in a life of prayer to enter into this discernment process with us. Here are some questions for her to consider:

  • Is your heart yearning for more than material things?

  • Are you looking for the one true Love of your life?

  • Do you have a healthy respect for marriage and family and yet feel called to a celibate life of self-gift?

  • Do you want to make a difference in this troubled world we live in?

  • Are you aware that the power of prayer reaches out to those who are suffering?

The great Carmelite mystic and doctor of the Church, St. John of the Cross, teaches us that "One act of pure love is worth more than all other acts together."

  • The call to follow Jesus is a call to give yourself in unconditional love to Love.

  • A life of prayer is a life of love.

  • Love is the only power that will change and heal our world.

  •  Love is a fire and all who come close to it are warmed. Jesus said "I have come to cast a fire on the earth and how I wish it were kindled!"

By endeavoring to live a life of love we are thereby making love present in the world. The adage "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness" is more true today than ever.
